The world was once ruled by the six Divine Beasts, but is now war-torn as the continent of Farland is beginning to feel the might of the Randall Empire. The story centers around rookie Lieutenant Will of the Randall Army. His journey takes him across the continent of Farland, utilizing the power of the titular Vaitz Blade to control monsters.

The player explores towns and outdoors to progress in storyline quests. Instead of human companions, the player has Vaitz crystals. The player must defeat a monster in turn-based combat to capture it with a Vaitz crystal to occupy one of the available spaces. Different monsters have different abilities, element attributes, and genes. Two monsters with reflecting genes can be fused to create a superior hybrid monster. Outside of regular combat, the player can participate in different kinds of arena battles and flying monster events.
