Tropical Lost Island is a single player, mouse-controlled adventure game with hidden object scenes and puzzles.

The story's plot centers on Hawaii and the gods who created its islands. The story goes that they created hundreds of small islands and nineteen large islands, of which people would live on just seven. They then created a twentieth island for their own use so that they could visit and keep an eye on things, furthermore they would leave clues to the location of their island, the Lost Island, in case later generations had doubts about their existence.

The game starts with an adventurer, Charlie Johnson, going in search of this island when his plane crashes. That's when the player's character steps in and the story splits alternating between Charlie on his island and the player following in his footsteps.

The story is told via a series of static images and associated messages. These then lead either to a puzzle or a hidden object scene all of which are timed. If time runs out on a hidden object scene it is replayed with a different set of objects. The hidden object scenes do give the player three hints which are renewed whenever a scene is replayed, however using a hint reduces the time remaining to solve the puzzle.
