Tonka Raceway is a game for children aged five and up based on the American Tonka franchise of toy trucks. It is a racing game that can be played with the game modes Time Trial, 2 Player Racing, or Vs. Team Tonka with characters from Tonka Town. The four tracks have different themes such as desert, jungle, rural or tundra. There are over 30 vehicles to choose from with different statistics based on durability, acceleration, top speed and handling. It is also possible to import custom vehicles designed in Tonka Garage.

The game's raceway staring screen offers access to different parts of the game. From the announcer's booth there is a press box with the hall of fame the option to print stickers and awards, using the Tonka TV blimp replays can be watched, custom tracks can be designed in the architect's trailer based on the assets used in the four tracks, in the upgrades lab credits earned through races can be used to improve the car statistics, and the starting line leads to the races.

The races are arcade-like and played from a top-down view. It is impossible to go beyond the track borders. Cars can only suffer a limited amount of damage before a pit stop needs to be done in order to get the car back to full performance. Along the way power-ups can be picked up such as repairs, a speed boost, a top speed increase or steering help. It is possible to damage the other cars.
