The realms of Devaloka and Naraka were once one world. General Asura waged a war in ancient time to reunite the two realms but fell in battle. Present day Naraka remains war torn between the human nations Regnum and Garam.

Marking the ninth Mothership entry in the Tales series, Tales of Innocence follows Asura's reincarnation into a teenager through the frontlines of war. Tales of Innocence is an action role-playing game that iterates on the series' combat system. During battles, the player controls one character at a time while two other ally characters are AI-controlled. Battles can be paused at will to give specific orders to allies.

The game breaks some series traditions, having resources dropping in battle that need to be manually picked up and procedurally generated dungeons.
