Nova 2001 is a 2D shoot 'em up set in space. The player controls a space ship that needs to destroy all enemies on the screen to move on to a new level. The ship can be steered in eight directions and the joystick has a button on top that is used for maintaining a stationary position on the screen. Enemies can approach from all sides and it is possible to shoot in eight directions, based on the direction the ship is facing. The game is played on a single screen, but it is possible to scroll slightly in any direction to extend the playfield, for instance to dodge bullets.
Enemies attack in swarms and there are five different types of enemy ships: Blain, Reda, Robotan, Tackong and Yadocanoide. When destroyed they leave behind fragment that can be picked up for points. There is a timer at the bottom of the screen that counts down quickly. When the Reda patrol robots are not destroyed before time runs out, a large enemy called M.I. joins the game and it takes a lot of damage to kill. Finishing a game quickly converts the remaining time into points. Enemies can approach in 64 different attack patterns and they receive a significant speed boost in the second half of the game. The fourth, eighth, sixteenth and twenty-fourth round contain bonus points. The ship has multiple lives to continue playing.
