Gang Wars is a 2D side-scrolling beat 'em-up game that puts players in the shoes of either Mike (player 1) or Jackie (player 2). In 1989 a girl gets kidnapped in New York and now you have to fight through hordes of gang members to rescue her.

Before starting you have to choose your fighter type. Power, speed, stamina or standard type. The first three types let you excel in either power, speed or guard. Its gives you five distribution point at one of these disciplines and two each at the remaining. The standard type starts with all disciplines at three points. Completing a stage earns you more points that can be distribution among the three disciplines as you choose. You fight various different gangsters and bosses with city scenery on the background. Object dropped by opponents like rocks, guns and baseball bats can be picked up and used to assault the enemies. The game can be played solo or with a friend.
