In the world of Chaos Gear, chaos is the source of all life. Those who control it compete against each other to capitalize it. The continued conflicts eventually resulted in the power of chaos rapidly diminishing. The short-lived existence of Chaos Diners who could create chaos power resulted in the world become militarized. Whoever controls the remaining power of chaos will ultimately control the world.

The player acts as a lord for the army of a controlled sector. To secure the sector, the main enemy base must be captured, and the player must not let their own base buildings be captured by the opposition. On each opponent's turn, there is the strategy phase, the action phase, and some special events. There are also enemy platoons to face in the battlefield. Successful conquest grants the lord knowledge for equipment and buildings as well as training points. As the player progresses more powerful units and utilities become available.
