Benkei Gaiden: Suna no Shō is the sequel to the PC Engine RPG Benkei Gaiden. The game is a turn-based role-playing game with random encounters utilizing a first-person battle system similar to Dragon Quest. The influence extends to the interaction menu, which features multiple verb commands.
The year is 1274; eighty-two years have passed since the capital was established in Kamakura. The Mongolian army, establishing its rule over China, has attacked Japan and conquered the city of Hakata. However, the Mongolian army has also suffered a devastating blow from a sudden storm and was forced to retreat. Emperor Kublai Khan, sensing that the storm was caused by a powerful spell, gathered sorcerers from his country and China and appointed one of the sorcerers as a general, sending him to conquer Japan.
Thus, the events of the game take place in 13th-century Japan, China, Mongolia, and Korea. The Mongols that infiltrate Japan use magic to create a large number of monsters, causing chaos and throwing Japan into a state of panic. The game starts with the protagonist setting out to exterminate the monsters infesting Japan with the help of a temple's chief priest.
The entire story is divided into two parts: the Japanese part and the Chinese mainland part.
The Japanese part deals with the protagonist searching for six crystals needed to break the barrier and wake up Benkei to defeat the cursed army.
The Mainland China part makes players travel across a vast map to the mainland in order to defeat the remaining three generals and Kublai Khan. It goes in some odd directions, such as having players travel through water with dinosaurs, adding time travel to the plot, being in a world where gods live in multiple dimensions, and other plot twists that are mixed with historical facts of that time period.
